Game Boards

This is my first edition to a line of high-end hardwood mancala board with semi-precious stones. However I'll need to cut to the chase on something. What has been seen cannot be unseen. While I was doing my best to follow the contours of the live edge and affect the mathematical necessities of a mancala board, keeping it rustic with organic shapes without complete uniformity... It all lent itself to another organic shape that I somehow missed until it was all the way done.

So without further ado. If you're into Big Black MANcala boards, have a Dark sense of humor, and like getting lots of giggles out of your house guests; this Piece could be for you. 

Now that that's out of the way, on a completely serious note and the intention with which I build everything, the following is the actual post on this item:

Mancala has been a favorite game of mine since my youth. Most of the time they are made as cheaply as possible with the least interesting of all game pieces. I'm confident there is a place for high-end hardwood mancala boards with similarly high-end stones that complement each other on color and organic to rustic aesthetic. 

This is a slab of sycamore salvaged from a firewood operation. It is a co-product from a large order of beams that I milled out with an Alaskan sawmill. Every little bit counts so I saved this small piece to turn into something worthwhile. The cups are all hand carved. The incredibly dark stain is an oxidization of Liquid Trees (our own brand of wood vinegar). The sheen it gives off was formed by hammer burnishing the entire surface with hundreds of thousands of ball peen hammer strikes. It was finished with a generous application of Odies Oil. The 48 stones are polished carnelian. 10 additional stones are included to safeguard against misplacing a few. As the stain is literally condensed smoke it has a permanent mild smokey scent with the surprising undertone of hot maple syrup.

It measures 27" long 10" wide and 2 1/8" tall.

This color scheme lends itself to a Halloween theme. The specific item is 30% oversized to affect being a main showpiece for a long coffee table.
